Make a little more room for fun in your daily life.
Life is amazing.
But things that suck happen. They happen to you, they happen to me and more often than not there is no good reason for them. When you stop and think about all the things that are wrong with the world it can be very depressing. There’s a lot of truly serious stuff going on in the world.
Then there are the truly serious issues that many of us face every day. Like when our name is spelled incorrectly on our coffee cups. Or we step in a puddle and get our shoes wet. Or our favorite restaurant is out of the one thing we came for and completely ruined our night.
These incredibly serious examples make our blood boil. We rant and rave to our friends and family about how horrible they are because we are such serious people. We take the things that life throws our way seriously because keeping up our appearances is serious business. Looking foolish in front of other people is a guaranteed trip to the outer circle and nobody wants to be in the outer circle, right?
I’m done with being serious. Are you ready to join me?
One of the cruelest jokes we play on ourselves is waiting until we are older to start having fun. We wait for much too long to stop worrying about what other people think about who we are as people. Learning to love yourself is the first step to being less serious and a lesson I wish we could teach kids in school.
I have a two-year-old son and if there’s one thing I hope he learns to not take life too seriously. There are serious moments, but I hope he understands that while serious moments should be taken seriously, most of life is about learning, exploring, failing, and love.
Anyone out there who is ready to get less serious, it’s time to pull up your boots and get a little goofy. Because we don’t know what’s going to happen tomorrow no matter how serious we are about knowing. You don’t need to live every day like your last. YOLO is not a good way to lilivee your life. You don’t need to gloss over any of the sad moments in your life and replace them with delusional optimism. But you do need to remember that although you didn’t get here by choice, you have a responsibility to yourself to steal moments of joy from the universe whenever you can.
The universe won’t miss them.
